| Enjoying Big Bend National Park |
|
Big Bend has always been on my list of places to photograph. Its vastness has lured many a photographer and naturalist to visit. It's that same vastness that has caused many of us to wonder how we will ever begin to plan a visit to this scenic national park. I had always expected that my first trip to Big Bend would be more of a scouting trip than a productive photographic excursion. But now, instead of feeling that I am going in blind, I have found the perfect guide to make the most of that first trip. It's called Enjoying Big Bend National Park by Gary Clark. It took only the first few paragraphs in the first chapter to entice me into getting serious about really going to Big Bend. Gary's description of his first visit really struck a chord with me. It confirmed the thoughts I already had on this region and the impressions that photographers have left me with in the past. Gary's writing throughout the book not only makes one anxious to get there, but it makes you feel as if you are right there in Big Bend with Gary as he shares his experiences with you. This guide book is a fun and enjoyable read with information that each visitor needs to know before getting there. The book is broken up into chapters that concentrate on individual trips, hikes and short drives. Gary has included something for everyone. Each trip has an excellent description of what to expect. Included is the length of the trip in miles along with the approximate time it will take to complete the trip. Gary also includes tips on safety considerations and water intake while in this area for each trip. Other important information is the time of day that is best to take the trip and the flora and fauna to be seen along the route. Gary's wife, Kathy Adams Clark, is the photographer for this book. Her images compliment the text perfectly and will make any photographer more enthusiastic about visiting Big Bend. Whether it's a roadrunner or a grand vista, Kathy's images really give the viewer the feel that they are right there with her. They also leave the photographer with the desire to visit Big Bend to try their hand at capturing the beauty of this National Park. I can't wait to get to Big Bend for my first visit. I now feel I can really get the most out of my first visit thanks to Gary and Kathy's Enjoying Big Bend National Park guide. |
