As
a child, I was raised with a deep appreciation of nature and animals.
I also traveled extensively because my father was in the Navy. During
my father's tour of Viet Nam, I joined a camera club at the Navy base.
My first serious camera I obtained when I was twelve; it was a Wardflex
twin-lens reflex.. After high school, I operated a photography studio;
after a couple years I closed the studio preferring not to photography
homo sapiens. I continued for the next year doing construction photography
and aerials. After working for three years as a starving artist, I started
school to obtain an education.. I continued photography working on the
Daily Mississippian newspaper and doing scientific photography for the
University of Mississippi Biology Department. Additional work with the
biology department developed my rabid interest in wildlife and nature
photography. Upon graduation with a degree in Environmental Geology I
worked for 30 years as an environmental scientist and continued my education.
My PhD studies centered around Forensic Geology and Microscopy. Photography
remained a hobby but was moved to the “back burner” as I helped
raise my five girls. In 2002, I set a goal to improve my photography skills. I enrolled in a couple workshops with Arthur Morris and followed that with multiple workshops with Charles (Chas) Glatzer and one with James Shadle. As I developed my photographic vision and deepened my skills, I decided in 2004 to become a full-time professional photographer. However, I had little desire to return to my early roots as a starving artist. I decided to start slow and build my photography business while working my full-time job as a scientist. For the past two years, I traveled over 100,000 miles a year to obtain stock photographs and build my portfolio. Most of my travel was within continental North America. This past year I have expanded my territory to include Belarus, Western Russia and Siberia. I live in west central Florida so I photograph birds nearly every day. Nevertheless, my passion is mammals with a concentration on endangered species. Last week marked my beginnning as a full-time professional photographer; so far, sales have been good and I have not lost any weight (although a couple months as a starving artist would improve my waist measurements). I look forward to seeing many of you in the field! Images:
